About INANE
A global community of nursing editors, publishers, authors, librarians, and scholars. Volunteer-run. No officers. No dues. Just a shared commitment to excellence in nursing literature since 1982.
What Is INANE?
INANE — the International Academy of Nursing Editors — is an international collaborative and global community focused on the practice, research, and education needs of nursing and healthcare publishing. Established in 1982, INANE promotes best practices in publishing and high standards in the nursing literature.
INANE serves editors of scholarly nursing journals, authors, readers and scholars of nursing literature, librarians, publishers, and emerging professionals interested in editorial practice. We are, in every sense of the word, a community brought together by a shared passion for the integrity and advancement of nursing knowledge.
About the Name "INANE"
Before INANE had a formal identity, editors of nursing journals often met each other at major nursing conferences, usually in the margins of larger meetings. Those informal gatherings led to a simple idea: nursing journal editors should have their own space to connect and converse.
When the group formed, its founders deliberately chose an organization that would be the antithesis of the rigid, rules-bound structures common in professional organizations of the era. The memorable acronym followed: International Academy of Nursing Editors — INANE — with a founding philosophy of no officers, no bylaws, no dues, no paid staff, no physical location, and no rules.
As long-time member Suzanne Smith wrote in 2011, INANE was a pioneering virtual organization sustained by people with a passion for their work, volunteering because they wanted to participate and preserving the founders’ vision as new members joined the community.
LONG LIVE INANE.
How INANE Functions
INANE maintains a tradition of “non-organization.” There are no formal officers, elections, or dues. Workgroups form around purpose, interest, and need, with participants volunteering according to their interests and availability.
Leadership is fluid. People who take responsibility for a project help move it forward, while broader questions are discussed openly within the community. The website, email list, conferences, and other activities depend on volunteer effort.
